Mendelsohn Residence

Los Angeles

Subject to Planning permission

This 1500 m² house is characterised by a 7m-high stretched, curved spine, linking the north entrance and living area with the south-facing family living space.

A strong sense of geometry, combined with austere lines and simple primary shapes that alternate between space and solidity give the entrance facade the appearance of an abstract work of art. This is reinforced by the simple colour contrasts: the red pigment of the house, which connects it firmly to the earth, and the blue pool, projecting into the surrounding green.

The subtle changes of the sky and trees are visible through vertical slits – one piercing entirely, from top to bottom, allowing the sun to penetrate and giving the building a sensuality that balances its imposing weight and silence.
